You know what? He should be embarrassed about it, not you. Clearly he needs more self-control or to admit he's not ready for commitment. If he feels you are "inadequte" by being you, which he may very well not, then clearly he should move on and find someone else that satisfies whatever his needs might be. If you're not what he's looking for, he shouldn't be leading you on. And you should see that.
